Final Game

GOOD LUCK IN YOUR SEASON FINALE!!!!!!!!
June 30

Updated News

Some notes from the coach to me,

The St. Anthony team played a lot more under control than the last time.  We were more prepared and had a bit of game planning to combat the physical play.  The guys executed to near perfection.  A few tense defensive moments, but far fewer than in some earlier games.  Much of the game was played in the St. Anthony end of the field.  I think we actually played better than the score indicates.

Now if they would just pay attention to the trainer and sharpen the fundamental kicking/passing skills ...

They are for the most part doing what I have asked in terms of position and strategy.  One thing we have worked hard on is playing the three defenders in a triangle with two forward and one back.  It is the responsibility of the two forward defenders to cover the soft middle when we have the ball in the opponent's end and come up and pass the ball back in if the other team tried to lob the ball out.  When we do that well, we take a lot of pressure off our keeper and defense.  That's why we've given up only two goals in two games (winning both) against teams that combined for 9 total earlier this season.

Very well put and good strategies!!!

A letter from the coach to me- very inspiring!!

Tim,

Quite the game it was.  I have never seen a card issued in any games prior to that (or any game in these age groups, for that matter), and there were numerous yellow cards and a red card, as well as the coach being ejected, in that one game.  Their team was throwing flying shoulder tackles and I heard one of their guys arguing with the ref that it was a "shoulder charge".  I had to go online to find out what a shoulder charge was, and it was pretty clear about making sure you match speed first so you don't "send the opponent flying which is a foul".  Evidently that part was left out when these kids were taught.

Anyhow, our guys played the game of their lives and pulled out from a 1-3 deficit to go up 4-3, only to give up the tying score with about 90 seconds to go.

I was so proud of our players, not only to come back and nearly get the win, but more so because in the midst of all the rough play they kept their heads and just kept getting up and playing hard.  No shrinking back and no giving in to the frustration.  I told them to take the intensity from this game and use it in the remaining games.  If we play like that every game we can probably take at least one of the two teams that beat us earlier.  We'll see as we start round 2 through the league tomorrow.  Next week we replay the two teams that beat us.

Machine update

Sounds like The Machine is still rollin' strong!! The game you recently played  sounded like a scene from "300" but ended in a tie. From what I hear, the boys held their own and didnt fall into the you play dirty so I will play dirty trap. Way to go!!!! Hopefully some of the boys rememeber what I said " Bad teams play dirty, good teams play together".
Keep playing as a team, play smart and use your talents. And again, hats off to Coach Dave for doing such a great job with the team.
